I have just finished reading "The Junkers" by Piers Paul Read. It's about a British diplomat in 1960s Berlin just after the Wall had gone up. He gets enmeshed with the Prussian von Rummelsberg family. I'm not telling you any more, you will have to read it. It's not War and Peace but it's a pleasant light read. Highly recommended.
"In every battle the eyes are the first to be conquered..."
- Tacitus, Germania
"One must work in solitude as a man who opens a clearing in virgin forest, sustained by the unique hope that somewhere in its depths, others are working to the same end."
- Ernst Jünger
"I find that I must go handsomely, whatever it costs me, and the charge will be made up in the fruit it brings."
