Rolex Style
If you see me smiling, it is because I have something big, hard, and shiny up my sleeve. The exclusive photo (at left) shows my new timepiece acquisition, a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner, which I wrote about recently in this column. It is the new Submariner model introduced in 2010, featuring cerachrome bezel and solid lug and bracelet. The dial sports a bold black face, which certain people might find offensive; these people should be politely told to fuck off. I do plan to wear the watch whilst swimming, diving and spearfishing, for which it was intended. But in the meantime I wear it to the office, where I can be found pairing it, as in the photo, with a W.H. Taylor candy-striped dress shirt with spread collar and a Brooks Brothers 3/2-roll grey sharkskin sack suit made, I am told, from the skin of a genuine great white shark. Note, too, my deeply tanned hand; tan courtesy of the cocktail garden party circuit.
LBF, you are an absolute riot! I have a had a day of it and this made me guffaw twice, congrats on the new tiny clock.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that you are going to put it to proper use. Too many men baby belongings like this one.
ReplyDeleteHey, very nice. Stay timely in good health and style.
ReplyDeleteNice one! But as far as I know, the new Sub was released some months ago. Not 3 years ago.
ReplyDeleteBut never mind...
By the way: When I spent the last 2 summer holidays at the beach in Tuscany (this year as well), my Sub never left my wrist. What a great feeling, bringing this watch back to its origin or purpose.
ReplyDeleteBut you gotta rinse it with clean water, after you get out of the sea...
Admiral, Classic. I love the Banker-Spearfisher look.
ReplyDeleteI’ve owned a Submariner all my adult life, but no longer wear it. Why? Two years ago, I brought it in to a Rolex dealer for cleaning, and he informed me that it was the rare version (only made for two years) with the “Submariner” in red. Value: $12,000 and rising. I was told that if the 600ft - 200m was also red, then that would mean $35,000. Anyway, too much to run around with, and so now if thugs jump me they’ll only be getting a paltry Timex worth $75.
ReplyDeleteSehr elegant!
ReplyDeleteLovely I wear my '66 24/7 and do everything with it. 45 years old and it keeps perfect time!
ReplyDeleteI prefer the old ones with the matted dial (without the gold around each marker) and acrylic crystal, but a Submariner is always an excellent time piece. The submariner has a wonderful military and explorer provenance as well. Enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteMy old watch Rolex is about 30-years-old now. My ex bought it for me after I kept breaking watches. While it has always lost time, had replacement parts 3 times (watch repair said, "That was a problematic year"), it continues to work. I gave up wearing it when I had to put on my reading glasses to see the time and cell phones took its place. However, now that I wear glasses all the time, I have started to wear it again and it "impresses" as it did not when it, and I, were younger.
ReplyDeleteI have the older model that used to be a "big" watch - still not sure about the new larger version but it looks very nice in the picture.
