Are they looking at a terrain model for an orders group, frag order perhaps, map check or tutelage on spoor? Can't tell from the angle. Nice photo though, lekker!
It is trackers kneeling on the ground with the equestrian guys on the horses. They still using R1 rifels (FN). This is probably in the late 70s. or 1980. After that the standard issue rifels were R4.
