Had I seen only the cover, I would have assumed it was a pulp adventure, but I am delighted that you have reminded us of Hans and Lotte Hass, underwater photographers and explorers from before the days of Cousteau, and theirs is in fact real adventure.
Hans wanted nothing to do with a girl on his expedition, but his funders thought one necessary for the film's success and insisted. Lotte, hired as a secretary, secretly learned how to dive and won Hans' heart by posing for pictures with sharks. So they got married and lived happily ever after. Which is even nicer than a pulp adventure
I recently met Hans Hass here in Vienna, and the nice thing is, he has retained his handsome looks. At well over ninety years still tall and slender, well-dressed and no less well-groomed, and retaining his trademark close-cropped beard of many decades. A model to aspire to, not just in casual academic adventurer style and achievement, but also in how to weather the march of the years.

ReplyDeleteI just ordered a pair of Cressi LD 3000 for a southern spearfishing trip later this month. Hopefully I won't spear my own foot... or worse.
