Born in Mayrhofen, Austria in 1942, Peter Habeler was a certified mountain guide and skiing instructor by the age of 21. Beginning in the mid-60s he and climbing partner Reinhold Messner assaulted the mountaineering world with an impressive series of climbs. Together they made the first ascent of
Yerupaja Chico in South America (1969), and the North face of
Eiger in a record 10 hours (1974). Following that was an ascent of
Hidden Peak via a new route (1975). In 1978 Peter Habeler and Reinhold Messner made the first ascent of
Everest without bottled oxygen.
Ranulph and Habeler would have made a great pair.
