The man was a poseur, a coward and a liar. I read that he bragged about shooting an unarmed German prisoner of war, a young lieutenant. I couldn't fine the specific reference, but I did find on the Internet this, "Hemingway's murky World War II 'Combat' Experience."
He famously said that he needed to kill things in order to stop killing himself.
