Of all of the foreign countries I've visited, NYC is the most foreign, and I'm an America. Manhattan is broiling hot, reeks of garbage, and is filled with the rabble of the world squawking to each other in a dozen different dialects.
America is a lot of things. It's huge with many ingredients. The West Coast/East Coast dichotomy doesn't even do it a smidgen of justice. I think one of the memes you convey best is still having the ability as Americans to partake and enjoy a multitude of high class endeavors. Unfortunately, the sheep are easily satiated by much baser things. But you still plug along and try to feed them good grass anyway.
Yes, and it looks like San Francisco when I was growing up. All of that Hippy-dippy shit made me the judgemental elitist bastard that I'm proud to be today!
This is so funny and strangely true. I am white. I remember once going to Bullock's (I think) in downtown Los Angeles with two of my friends and everyone was either brown or black or whatever. I heard one well dressed hispanic woman say to her friend, 'Where are all the Americans?'
We still have the illusion of the blonde, blue eyed All-American. One of my co-workers (Asian) once described someone as All-American and that person turned out to be a blue-eyed blonde.
The melting pot which was originally a mixture of Europeans is now a stew of the world. I wonder what in fifty years what All-American will mean?
