Being an Anglican (Episcopalian, actually) I never have been able to understand the allure of Rome to those not born into it. But then Evelyn Waugh was much smarter than I, and funnier, too.

anglo-catholics like being told what to do/think by 2 human masters who both sit on thrones in palaces. if you count the trinity and the virgin i guess that makes 4 more.

Anglo-Catholics are Anglicans, old fellow; not the same as English Roman Catholics.

Dearest Reggie, even some of us born into the Church of Rome don't understand its allure.

The photo shows a Sarum-inspired altar, a ceremonial style much admired by so-called Prayer-Book or English-Use Anglo-Catholics. Sadly, most Anglo-Catholics today have turned their backs on their own, rich, catholic patrimony and prefer Roman-use ceremonial.

Reggie - but it's all flowers, perfumed atmospheres and heavy drapes, what could be more perfect?
