This looks like a great story that I wasn't aware of. I only knew of another ship called the Königsberg that served in the Spanish war of 36/37.

Hoyt’s other excellent work on German East Africa, “Guerilla: Colonel von Lettow-Vorbeck and Germany's East African Empire” is also worth a read. In early 2012 the first English translation of Lettow-Vorbeck’s “Mein Leben” will be released.

My great uncle by marriage Capt. R.A.Wilson RN DSO commanded H.M.S. Mersey in the action against Konigsberg. His DSO awarded following the battle was bequeathed to me along with his other medals.
