This is quite a coincidence as I was thumbing through this book at my local bookshop yesterday. Have you read this book Admiral? I will probably purchase it over the weekend. Give my regards to the "California Savages" (Waugh) .
Yes and I recommend it. Andrew is quite critical of the Victorians with much justification. For the record I am too; I'm more of an 18th C. chap myself. A fascinating read with a typical Wilsonian focus on personality, gossip, and anecdote.
"In every battle the eyes are the first to be conquered..."
- Tacitus, Germania
"One must work in solitude as a man who opens a clearing in virgin forest, sustained by the unique hope that somewhere in its depths, others are working to the same end."
- Ernst Jünger
"I find that I must go handsomely, whatever it costs me, and the charge will be made up in the fruit it brings."
