I've got to read this. I love Louis Auchincloss. Being a low WASP from a humble background, I like to read his books just to see how the other half lived. I enjoyed reading Stephen Birmingham's books too.
Louis Auchincloss has incredible insight to his own class. It's unusual for someone to write about themselves so well. He doesn't just write about the clothes they wear or the parties they go to. He gets right down to the way old WASPs think and their attitude towards the rest of the world. It ususally takes an outsider to have such perspective.
"In every battle the eyes are the first to be conquered..."
- Tacitus, Germania
"One must work in solitude as a man who opens a clearing in virgin forest, sustained by the unique hope that somewhere in its depths, others are working to the same end."
- Ernst Jünger
"I find that I must go handsomely, whatever it costs me, and the charge will be made up in the fruit it brings."
