The battle that saved the West. Greek heroism is umatched. Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, Plataea. Even during the thousand year Byzantine Empire, it was Greek emperors holding off the barbarians of the East from conquering Europe. Move forward to WWII, the Greeks humiliated the Italians pushing them well into Albania, forcing Hitler to attack Greece from the North. Finally after six months when the Germans marched in Athens, Hitler himself " For the sake of historical truth I must verify that only the Greeks, of all the adversaries who confronted us, fought with bold courage and highest disregard of death." (speech before the Reichstag, 4 May 1941).
Thank you Admiral for this post paying tribute to these great men, whom the West seems to have forgotten.
