David - Scoop or unless you've been an inmate of an English Prep School A Handful of Dust may be more accessible and is wonderful. Brideshead Revisited, like a 1945 Quinta do Noval, is best left for a time when it can be truly appreciated.
Lots of people like the first half of Brideshead, before everything starts to unravel. It's sort of the whole point of the novel. Never mind. It's the Ordeal of Gilbert Penfold, by the way, and I recommend the Sword of Honour trilogy.
"In every battle the eyes are the first to be conquered..."
- Tacitus, Germania
"One must work in solitude as a man who opens a clearing in virgin forest, sustained by the unique hope that somewhere in its depths, others are working to the same end."
- Ernst Jünger
"I find that I must go handsomely, whatever it costs me, and the charge will be made up in the fruit it brings."

I really have been meaning to purchase some of his books, can you suggest a good one to begin with?
Decline and Fall (frothy)
Brideshead Revisited (the first half is perfect)
A Handful of Dust (the greatest novel of the 20th century)
It depends on what you're up for ...
The first half of Brideshead is so perfect, I thought I was the only one who thought that.
Oh the one about Gilbert Penfold is hilarious, it's been years since I've read it - Is it the ballad of...?
David ~ I would probably start with Scoop, Black Mischief, and A Handful of Dust.
