It lacks a certain seriousness, a sense of the realities of an economic superpower in a world of violent disagreements about the usual things, such as land, people, borders, resources. For example, just this weekend the new German Defence Minister, Ursula van der Leyen, visited the troops in Afghanistan. She refused to be photographed with any military equipment, any tanks or guns, whatsoever.
